Hi! I’m Gerard. I’m an aspiring language arts teacher, currently getting my Masters in the Art of Teaching from the University of South Florida. I’ve wanted to be a teacher since high school, where I was blessed with some of the best English teachers on earth. I realized that I wanted to be a teacher to give back to students the way my teachers gave to me. In my studies, I’ve discovered a passion for teaching students using various types of technology. I bring a technological expertise to the classroom, as my focus surpasses traditional literature/language arts and includes digital literacy and interactions – a trend that is rising in the high school language arts arena. Students have the most well-rounded learning experience by acquiring knowledge from both the teacher and their peers, so my teaching philosophy also places strong emphasis on collaborative learning.

Here are some things I like:

Social Media: As a teacher, I’m always trying to learn new things, and there is no better place to do that than an online community. There is so much knowledge on the internet, as long as you know where to look and filter out the junk. The best way to learn, in my opinion, is by surrounding yourself with individuals who are the best at what they do and having conversations with them. That’s why I use Twitter to have conversations with the best educators every day. Google+ is a platform I use to learn and discuss my other passions, such as sports and technology. Facebook is primarily a source I use to keep in touch with my old friends, and WordPress is for sharing my thoughts that are longer than 140 characters. Apple Technology: I’m slightly partial to Apple because of the intuitiveness of the software. I think students respond very well to it, and despite the price, the learning curve is much quicker. I’ve experimented with using iPads in the classroom and found exciting learning and content creation opportunities for students.

Reading: It’s sad that as a language arts teacher to-be, I rarely get the time to read as much as I want. Bummer. I love reading YA literature, but my favorite author is Margaret Atwood. The Harry Potter series will always be a solid favorite of mine as well
